Christian Kindergarten & First Grade

Small Enough to Be Known. Structured Enough to Excel.

Kindergarten & First Grade built on mastery, leadership, and personal attention.

Choosing a school for your child’s foundational years is not a small decision.

Kindergarten and first grade shape how a child sees learning, authority, confidence, and even their faith. In larger Christian schools, many families find strong tradition, facilities, and programs. But some parents quietly wonder:

Will my child truly be known?

Will they receive individual attention in reading?

Will they move forward because they’re ready, or because the calendar says so?

Will their faith be lived daily, not just taught weekly?

At Agape Adventure Academy, we are intentionally small. And intentionally structured. We believe children thrive when they are deeply known, academically guided, and spiritually grounded.

How Are We Different From Larger Christian Schools?

We respect the role larger Christian schools play in our community. But we are built differently — especially for Kindergarten and First Grade.

Here’s what that means for your child:

• Smaller Learning Environment

Your child is not one of twenty-five.

They are known by name, strengths, weaknesses, and growth patterns.

Small size allows us to:

Notice reading struggles early

Challenge advanced learners appropriately

Correct habits before they solidify

Build confidence intentionally

In larger environments, children often keep up. Here, children move forward.

Mastery-Based Advancement Instead of Age-Based Promotion

In traditional grade-level systems, children move forward together.

At Agape, children move forward when they demonstrate mastery.

That means:

Reading skills are solid before progressing

Math concepts are understood, not memorized

Writing mechanics are internalized before expanding

We do not rush foundations. We strengthen them.

Mastery means a child can:

Demonstrate understanding independently

Apply the skill consistently

Retain the skill over time

When mastery is achieved, growth accelerates naturally.

Leadership Training Integrated Daily

Leadership at Agape does not begin in middle school. It begins at five.

In Kindergarten and First Grade, leadership looks like:

Completing work without constant prompting

Serving peers

Resolving conflict respectfully

Taking responsibility for materials

Following through on commitments

We are not building compliance. We are building character.

Faith and leadership are woven into daily rhythms, not confined to devotional time alone.

Individual Academic Progress Tracking

Parents deserve clarity. At Agape, academic growth is observed, documented, and communicated.

We track:

 Reading fluency

Phonogram mastery

Spelling development

Writing samples

Math concept understanding

Families receive two formal progress notes each school year. In addition, we monitor skill progression regularly so there are no surprises.

We do not guess at growth. We observe it, measure it, and steward it.

A Strong Reading Foundation: Our Commitment to Literacy

If you are comparing schools, this may be your most important question:

How do you teach reading?

At Agape, we use a structured, classical, phonics-based approach.

We do not rely on guesswork, pictures, or memorization strategies.

We teach children how language works.

The Riggs Institute & Phonogram Mastery

Our students learn using the Riggs Institute method, rooted in classical language instruction.

Children are taught:

The 70+ phonograms of the English language

How sounds combine to form words

Spelling rules and language patterns

Students are regularly tested on phonogram mastery. Scores are tracked so we can see growth over time and address gaps immediately.

Phonogram mastery builds:

Strong decoding skills

Confident spelling

Clear writing mechanics

Long-term reading comprehension

When children understand the structure of language, reading becomes logical, not mysterious.

All About Reading & All About Spelling

We also utilize the All About Reading and All About Spelling programs, which reinforce phonics through systematic instruction.

This classical approach supports:

Small-group literacy instruction

Explicit spelling rule teaching

Fluency practice

Dictation and writing integration

Children do not move forward simply because a unit is finished. They move forward when skills are demonstrated clearly and confidently.

Reading Fluency & Tracking

We monitor reading fluency regularly.

We assess:

Accuracy

Speed

Expression

Comprehension

Growth is documented so families can see measurable progress. If a child needs reinforcement, we intervene early. If a child is advanced, we challenge appropriately. No child is left drifting.

Independent Reading & Confidence

Beyond structured instruction, children are encouraged to grow in independent reading.

They:

Set achievable reading goals

Build stamina

Develop comprehension skills

Experience the joy of finishing books

Strong readers become strong learners. And strong learners become confident leaders.

Structured. Not Chaotic.

Because we are smaller, some parents initially wonder:

“Is it structured enough?” Yes.

Agape is warm. Agape is relational. Agape is joyful. But it is also structured.

Children have:

Clear expectations

Defined academic blocks

Accountable work completion

Consistent consequences

Calm authority

When a child does not want to complete work, we do not shame or escalate emotionally. We clarify expectations.

We offer appropriate choices within boundaries. We reinforce responsibility. Leadership includes learning to do hard things.

Faith That Is Lived Daily

We are unapologetically Christ-centered.

Faith at Agape includes:

Biblical leadership principles

Scripture integration

Character formation

Service mindset

Gratitude and responsibility

This is not simply moral instruction. It is discipleship through daily practice.

Who Thrives at Agape?

Children who thrive here are:

Curious

Capable of growth

Ready for structure

Supported by parents who value partnership

Willing to work toward mastery

We are not built to be the largest school. We are built to be intentional.

Why Foundational Years Matter Most

Kindergarten and First Grade are not simply academic stepping stones.

They form:

Reading habits

Writing mechanics

Math reasoning

Attention stamina

Authority response

Confidence in learning

If foundations are rushed, gaps compound. If foundations are strengthened, growth accelerates. At Agape, we slow down to build strong.

And when foundations are strong, children excel naturally.
